can only result from venous obstruction, the oedema being one of the essential factors in producing fibrosis. Brooks 1 of Chicago has, in recent years, performed an interesting scries of experiments upon isolated muscles in animals, and has established the following facts : (i) Ligature of the artery produces atrophy and no fibrosis ; (2) ligature of the artery and vein together produces the same effect ; (3) ligature of the vein alone produces massive fibrous tissue replacement of the muscle. The " sterno-mastoid tumour " is never present at birth, but appears ten to fourteen days after birth. It has a cartilaginous consistency, and gradually disappears in four to six months' time. It is very like a soft fibroma on section. Investigation of 30 cases of torticollis by Middleton 2 showed that 25 gave a definite history of " sterno-mastoid tumour "
